How to Do Secret Santa: Rules, Steps and Gift Ideas
Secret Santa is the easiest way to give gifts in a bigger group without everyone buying something for everyone. Here are the popular variations, how to run it step by step, the right budget and a few gift ideas. You can draw names right here, online and for free.

What is Secret Santa?
Everyone in a group secretly draws the name of one other person and gives a gift to just them, usually up to a price limit agreed on beforehand. Everyone gets a gift, and nobody has to buy ten. The fun is in the secret: until the gifts are opened, nobody knows who drew whom.
Secret Santa is most popular around the holidays, at the office, in the family, with friends or in a club. It works all year, though, for a team farewell or a reunion.
Popular ways to play
Not every Secret Santa runs the same way. These are the variations you’ll come across most:
- Classic Secret Santa: Everyone draws a name and picks a gift for that person. Works best when there’s a wishlist to go on.
- Gag gift exchange: Everyone wraps something silly, odd or regifted on purpose. It’s about the laugh, not the price.
- White Elephant: Everyone brings one wrapped gift for the pile, then players take turns opening a new gift or stealing one that’s already open. Also called Yankee Swap or Dirty Santa. The difference to Secret Santa: nobody draws names, and nobody knows who ends up with which gift.
- Wishlist Secret Santa: Everyone shares a short wishlist up front, so their Secret Santa is sure to find something that fits.
How to organize Secret Santa, step by step
A smooth Secret Santa only takes a few decisions up front:
- Pick the group and the date: Who’s in, and when and where do you exchange gifts?
- Agree on a budget: One price limit for everyone, like $20, $25 or $30, keeps it fair.
- Draw names: From a hat if everyone’s in the same room, online if not. The one rule: nobody draws themselves.
- Share wishes (optional): Anyone who likes can list a few wishes within the budget, so their Secret Santa isn’t shopping blind.
- Exchange gifts: On the day, everyone hands over their gift, and the guessing starts.

How our Secret Santa worksThe timeline for the holiday season
Between Thanksgiving and the holidays, calendars fill up fast. If you’re planning Secret Santa for a holiday party, start in early November. This schedule works well:
- Four weeks before: Settle the group, the date and the budget.
- Three weeks before: Draw names. Anyone who likes can give their Secret Santa a few ideas with a wishlist.
- Two weeks before: Buy the gift while shipping is still quick. Mailing it across the country? Leave a few extra days.
- On the day: Collect the gifts, open them, guess.
The right budget
The price limit matters most for keeping things even. At work, $20 to $25 is common; with family and friends, often $25 to $50. What counts is that everyone sticks to it, or the smaller gifts look skimpy next to the pricey ones.
A tip: set the budget a little lower rather than higher. A thoughtful small gift often goes over better than an expensive one bought in a hurry.
Secret Santa gift ideas on a small budget
Good Secret Santa gifts are personal, useful or funny, and they stay within the budget. These are safe bets:
- Snacks and sweets, or a small specialty treat
- A nice mug, a notebook or something for the desk
- Fun socks or a tongue-in-cheek accessory
- A scented candle, a small plant or some decor
- A mini game or a small tech gadget
- Still stuck? Our ready-made gift lists, like “Secret Santa under $25” and “Stocking stuffers under $15”, are full of ideas.
A wishlist means no wrong gifts
The most common Secret Santa letdown: you draw someone you barely know and end up stuck in the store. A short wishlist per person helps. Everyone adds a few wishes within the budget, and their Secret Santa just takes a look. It’s not required, though. Secret Santa works fine without one.
With our Secret Santa, you see the wishlist right along with your match if the person linked one. If not, you can ask them for a few wishes anonymously.
Whoever reserves a wish stays invisible: the person the list belongs to doesn’t see that it’s taken, or by whom. The surprise lasts until the gifts are opened, and nobody gets it wrong.
